Gay signed a two-year, $17 million deal to the Spurs, with a team option for the second season, prior to the 2017-18 campaign after an individually successful stint with Sacramento. However, Gay suffered a torn Achilles early in the midst of the 2016-17 season, forcing the forward to settle for less money than he previously could’ve gotten.
Gay declined his $8.8 million team option in mid-June, giving him the freedom to browse a free agency market short on teams able to hand out large contracts. In the end, the former UConn Huskie comes back to San Antonio for just over a million dollars more than what his last contract would’ve paid him.
Gay endured a major drop off in production with the Spurs, albeit coming off the bench in nearly every game for the first time in his NBA career. Gay averaged a career-low 11.5 points per game in 21.6 minutes per game this past season. He will likely play a similar role with the Spurs this upcoming season.
