Trainer Ronnie Shields has provided an update regarding WBC Middleweight Champion Jermall Charlo. During a recent interview, Shields revealed that Charlo is ready to return to the ring after enduring a back injury in June.
“He’s back now,” Shields told Michelle Joy Phelps’ Behind The Gloves.
“He hurt his back right before the fight but now, he’s good.”
Jermall Charlo has only fought twice since the COVID-19 virus hit the U.S. in early 2020. He earned a 12-round unanimous decision victory against Sergiy Derevyanchenko in September 2020. Nine months later, he earned another 12-round unanimous decision victory against Juan Macias Montiel. He planned to defend his middleweight title against Maciej Sulecki on June 19, 2022, but his back injury forced him to pull out of the fight.
It is unclear who Charlo will fight when he returns, but Shields is hopeful that it may be Golovkin.
“If GGG comes up and beats Canelo or if he loses, he still has two belts. Maybe that can be a fight for Jermall because he wants to unify,” Shields said.
“Hopefully, that can happen.”
