Report: Houston Rockets Pursuing Lionel Hollins As Assistant Coach
The Houston Rockets are making a strong push at former Memphis Grizzlies head coach Lionel Hollins to be an assistant on Kevin McHale’s staff, according to reports. Hollins has been pursued for head coaching vacancies such as Los Angeles and Cleveland, and it’s considered somewhat of a stretch for him to accept an assistant’s role.
Hollins was denied a new contract by the Grizzlies following the 2013 season where they won 56 games and fell to the San Antonio Spurs in the Western Conference Finals. Even though the Rockets have their anchor in Dwight Howard, their team defense is one of several areas that needs improvement, which is one of Hollins’ philosophical strengths. Credit Houston for taking chances in their efforts, but at least for now, this one seems out of reach.
