Two tech companies, Suno and Udio-maker Uncharted Lab, have rose to prominence in the music industry after releasing artificial intelligence programs that enable users to generate songs from prompts. As the use of AI to generate songs, including those featuring voice filters mimicking prominent artists, becomes more prevalent, many have raised legal and ethical concerns. In response, the Recording Industry Association of America has coordinated legal action to combat this issue. Now, Universal Music Group, Sony Music Entertainment and Warner Music Group are filing lawsuits against Suno and Udio-maker Uncharted Lab.
“The music community has embraced AI and we are already partnering and collaborating with responsible developers to build sustainable AI tools centered on human creativity that put artists and songwriters in charge,” RIAA Chairman Mitch Glazier said.
“But we can only succeed if developers are willing to work together with us. Unlicensed services like Suno and Udio that claim it’s ‘fair’ to copy an artist’s life’s work and exploit it for their own profit without consent or pay set back the promise of genuinely innovative AI for us all.”
Through these lawsuits, the industry’s biggest record labels and the RIAA seek the following:
- Declarations that the two services infringed plaintiffs’ copyrighted sound recordings
- Injunctions barring the services from infringing plaintiffs’ copyrighted sound recordings in the future
- Damages for the infringements that have already occurred
Suno nor Udio-maker Uncharted Lab have issued a public statement regarding the matter.
