The LA Rams just hired the youngest coach in NFL history. Now the Rams will pair him with one of the most experienced defensive minds in football, Wade Phillips. ESPN’s Adam Schefter broke the story.

Denver decided not to renew Phillips’ contract this offseason for whatever reason. Denver ranked first in analytical defensive DVOA in 2015 and 2016 making the Phillips hire a home run hit. The Broncos don’t win Super Bowl 50 without him. Denver’s new head coach Vance Joseph decided that he did not want Wade to be his defensive coordinator.
Phillips, 69, will be bringing his patterned 3-4 defense with him to LA. It will be interesting to see what roster moves the Rams make because of the defensive change as they previously ran a 4-3 last season. Get used to seeing Aaron Donald as an oversized defensive end. This will be Wade’s 9th different defensive coordinator job. Phillips also served as a head coach for the Broncos, Bills, and Cowboys as well.
