Melina Matsoukas’ directorial debut, Queen & Slim, is shaping up to be one of the year’s most interesting films. After a frenetic, wild ride of a first trailer teasing a “black Bonnie and Clyde,” I was already all-in on this one. Now, a second trailer was released that’s full of tension and quieter character moments and I’m not sure if theres a level above ‘all-in’ but, that’s where I am now. Check it out below:
Written by Lena Waithe, Queen & Slim tells the story of a first date gone horrifically wrong. Daniel Kaluuya and newcomer Jodie Turner-Smith star as the unlucky couple who, after a nice enough Tinder date, are stopped by a cop with his own agenda. Things go from bad to worse when Kaluuya’s Slim ends up shooting the officer and the two must go on the run. Turner-Smith looks to be the standout here even if it’s her first major role. Let’s not forget Kaluuya though because he’s already proven his talent time and again.
Obviously, his breakout role came in 2017’s Get Out. But, he’s also turned in impressive performances in Sicario, Black Panther, and Widows. He recently signed a first-look deal with Paramount Players through his production banner, 59%. Kaluuya is set to appear next alongside Lakeith Stanfield in the Ryan-Coogler-produced Fred Hampton biopic, Jesus Was My Homeboy. He’s also expected to appear in Black Panther 2 when that drops in 2022.
Queen & Slim hits theaters on November 27th.
