Jamaine Ortiz has not been in the ring as much as many fight fans would hope, but he already has his sights set on a major showdown next year. During a recent interview with Boxing Scene, Ortiz called out newly-crowned WBC Lightweight Champion Shakur Stevenson. Without hesitation, the 135-pound contender said that he’ll “crack” the Newark native.
“Put him in the ring with me. I’ll crack him,” Ortiz said.
“I don’t think Shakur would be a hard fight for me. I’m a whoop his ass.”
Ortiz was ringside at T-Mobile Arena on Thursday, November 16 when Stevenson outpointed the previously unbeaten Edwin De Los Santos to grab a title in his third weight class. While the New Jersey-born fighter was able to capture the green championship belt, he and many observers felt that he could have done more to make the fight entertaining and action packed.
“I apologize to my fans. I apologize to everybody that felt I could have did more. I did too, so, sorry,” Stevenson said after the fight.
Stevenson didn’t indicate when he’d return to the ring, but potential fights with Ortiz, Vasyl Lomachenko, Emmanuel Navarrete and Gervonta “Tank” Davis remain in the realm of possibility.
