Christmas came early to the 757! On December 23, 2024, Newport News, Virginia native Michael Vick returned home as the next head coach of the Norfolk State University football team.
Vick is not a Norfolk State University graduate, but he’s very familiar with college football in the state of Virginia. During the late 1990s and early 2000s, Vick helped lead the Virginia Tech Hokies to a 22-2 record over two years with appearances in the Sugar and Gator Bowls. Along the way, Vick threw for 3,279 yards, ran for 1,216 yards and scored 38 touchdowns while earning Big East Offensive Player of the Year and All-American honors.
The Norfolk State Spartans have not found the on-field success that Vick has. The program has made the FCS Playoffs once in 15 years. More recently, the Spartans have lost 30 of their last 45 games. However, Norfolk State University President Dr. Javaune Adams-Gaston believes Vick is the man to turn things around.
“From my conversations with Michael, I knew he was a transformational human,” Adams-Gaston said.
“I knew that he understood what it takes to change young men’s lives and make them leaders of our institution. In transforming their lives, he will transform our football team and our football success at Norfolk State.”
Vick will begin the process of transforming the football team on August 28, 2025 when the Towson Tigers come to William “Dick” Price Stadium in Norfolk, Virginia.
