The 66th Annual GRAMMY Awards are still one month away, but Netflix is already working to highlight some of the biggest names in music.
On Friday, January 5, 2024, Netflix unveiled the release date for one of their most highly-anticipated documentaries yet. The Greatest Night In Pop, directed by Bao Nguyen, will premiere at the Sundance Film Festival on January 19 before finding its way online on January 29. The documentary “takes viewers back to January 25, 1985, when dozens of the biggest names in music convened at a Los Angeles studio and checked their egos at the door amidst the recording of a song to benefit African famine relief.”
“Chronicled in the doc is the massive undertaking to assemble the world’s most impressive supergroup in a time before cell phones and email. That group of artists, led by the song’s co-writers and two of the most significant musicians of the 20th century — Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie — came from different worlds but united to record ‘We Are the World,'” a brief description from Deadline’s Matt Grobar reads.
The film will feature behind-the-scenes footage of Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson, Quincy Jones, Lionel Richie, Smokey Robinson and countless others working to perfect the track. Julia Nottingham, Richie, Bruce Eskowitz, Larry Klein, Harriet Sternberg and George Hencken will produce the film. Angus Wall, Amit Dey and Becky Read are listed as executive producers.
