From NBA.com:
The Cleveland Cavaliers star says he’s humbled to be chosen for the 20th anniversary cover “of a game I’ve played and loved since I was a little kid. We were able to do something really unique for the cover that represents everything that drives me and inspires me — from my family to where I come from and words I live by.”
Last year’s cover athlete was Kyrie Irving, a teammate of James at the time he was selected for the cover. Irving was then traded to Boston nearly three months later, under three weeks prior to the release of the game.
James is 33 years old and still the best player in basketball by a wide margin, so it makes sense he’d be the cover for the world’s premier NBA video game.
This is James’ second stint as a cover athlete; he was also on the front of NBA 2K14.
