ESPN’s The Undefeated has been hard at work delivering musical projects with purpose time after time. Their work started last fall in the aftermath of the deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Rayshard Brooks, Oluwatoyin Salau and several others. The Washington, D.C. based media outlet put together their efforts to deliver Music For The Movement I with the help of Jensen McRae, Alex Isely, Terrace Martin, Rapsody, 9th Wonder and several other talented musicians. Putting their musical genius together, the group covered timeless Civil Rights Anthems like “Strange Fruit” by Billie Holiday and “People Get Ready” by The Impressions.
“We’re facing job losses and economic uncertainty,” the ESPN imprint said about the project.
“And we are being confronted, yet again, with the killing of Black lives by those who are supposed to serve and protect. And despite all the challenges we were already facing, we have turned out in record numbers in the streets to demand change.”
Following the success of Music For The Movement I, The Undefeated recruited Tobe Nwigwe, Freddie Gibbs, Tinashe and Brent Faiyaz for Music For The Movement II. Once again, the group delivered music with a social justice message while covering classic songs like “I’m Every Woman” by Whitney Houston and “Wake Up Everybody” by The Blue Notes.
As the summer kicks off, The Undefeated is back with yet another installment of the Music For The Movement series. This time around, they have enlisted the help of the outspoken Maryland native Cordae, soulful songwriter Lucky Daye and the incomparably beautiful Chloe Bailey. Not to mention, the project will feature a spoken word piece from the unparalleled Yara Shahidi and an outro from the talented Kamashington.
Music For The Movement will arrive this Friday. Check out the tracklist below.
