Charlotte Hornets big man Montrezl Harrell is facing felony drug charges after a traffic stop in Richmond, Kentucky. According to authorities, the NBA veteran was pulled over for driving behind a vehicle too closely by a state trooper. The state trooper claims he smelled marijuana and after completing a search of the vehicle found three pounds of marijuana in vacuum-sealed bags. Harrell has been charged with trafficking less than five pounds of marijuana. If he is convicted he could face up to five years in prison.

Montrezl Harrell is scheduled for a preliminary hearing on July 13th at the Madson County District Court. The NBA veteran is a former Louisville Cardinals basketball star and has spent the last seven seasons in the NBA. Neither the Charlotte Hornets nor Harrell himself has commented on the arrest at this time. The Hornets traded for the big man prior to the NBA Trade Deadline and is set to be a free agent this summer. First, he will have to go through this legal process.

While marijuana is legal in some form in a majority of the states in the country, Kentucky is not one of those states. Montrezl Harrell faces a legal battle ahead of free agency and it is too early to tell how this will impact his value in the NBA moving into free agency. We here at Def Pen Sports will continue to update the story as it progresses into the summer.
