Michigan State University has elected to suspend its head football coach, Mel Tucker, without pay amid an ongoing sexual assault investigation.
Tucker’s suspension and accompanying investigation stem from allegations made by Brenda Tracy, a prominent speaker and activist who works closely with the university to address sexual and interpersonal violence on campus. During her time in Lansing, Tracy alleges that Tucker sent her unsolicited gifts, asked her if she would date him if he wasn’t married and masturbated while on the phone with her without her consent. Tucker also admitted to having a sexual encounter with Tracy, but says it was consensual.
The university has reportedly known about the allegations levied against Tucker since December 2022. However, an independent investigator did not submit a final report until the end of July 2023. A hearing regarding Tucker’s future at the university is scheduled for early October.
“The university’s objective has been and remains focused on conducting a fair, thorough and unbiased investigation and allowing the processes to play out,” Michigan State University Athletic Director Alan Haller said.
Longtime assistant Harlon Barnett will step in as the team’s interim head coach. Alongside Barnett, Former Michigan State University Spartan Head Coach Mark Dantonio will also step in as an assistant.
