Defensive lineman Michael Bennett is no stranger to controversy. He’s been one of the NFL’s more outspoken players on a variety of issues and he had his own run-in with the law in Las Vegas the night of the McGregor/Mayweather fight in August of 2017. Now, Michael Bennett has been indicted by a grand jury in Harris County, Texas, on a felony charge of injuring an elderly woman.
The woman, a 66-year-old employee of NRG Stadium, is paraplegic and has worked at the stadium for several years. She was on the field immediately following the conclusion of Super Bowl LI. Bennett had a field pass for the game and was trying to make his way to celebrate with his brother, Martellus, who had just won the championship as a member of the New England Patriots.
Allegedly, Bennett was denied access at the point he tried to enter the field and was told to go through some other checkpoint. Instead, he supposedly ignored those directions, and in doing so left the woman with an injured shoulder.
Houston Police Chief Art Acevedo acknowledged there is no video footage of the incident at this time. But had some harsh words to say in reference to Michael Bennett and the case that’s been 13 months in the making.
Bennett was recently traded from the Seattle Seahawks to the winner of this last Super Bowl, Philadelphia Eagles. The Eagles have released a statement regarding the events surrounding their newly-acquired defensive lineman:
Eagles Statement on Michael Bennett: We are aware of the situation involving Michael Bennett and are in the process of gathering more information. Because this is an ongoing legal matter, we will have no further comment at this time.
