With the TIFF just around the corner, there will surely be no shortage of awards talk and coverage in the coming months. But here at Def Pen, we believe it is never too early to start throwing down predictions for the upcoming awards season. With that being said the first official Def Pen prediction for the upcoming awards season is that Matt Damon will receive an Oscar nomination for one of his two upcoming fall films. Damon will appear in ‘Downsizing’ an Alexander Payne directed film about people being shrunk down to the size of a thumb (yes, you read that correctly). As well as, ‘Suburbicon’ which is directed by George Clooney and written by the Coen brothers. Both of these projects have awards season written all over them. From the talent involved and the seemingly satirical nature of both films, ‘Suburbicon’ and ‘Downsizing’ seem to be perfect vehicles to highlight Damon’s strengths as an actor.
The international trailer for ‘Suburbicon’ is the best look we’ve had yet at what George and Matt have in-store for us this fall. The film seems very Fargoesque in the sense that it seems to be centered around a suburban man who got in way too deep with the wrong people and is totally lost and confused about how to get out of the situation. Secondly, the film is written by the writers and directors of the original ‘Fargo’ film, so it’s no real surprise that the film bears such a strong resemblance. The film is stacked with talent in front of the camera as well with Julianne Moore and Oscar Issac rounding out the supporting cast. Both Moore and Issac have been award’s darlings in the past which bodes well for ‘Suburbicon’s’ chances this fall.
We’ve attached the official synopsis and new trailer for “Suburbicon’ below. ‘Suburbicon’ is set to debut in theatres on October 27th, 2017.
‘Suburbicon is a peaceful, idyllic, suburban community with affordable homes and manicured lawns — the perfect place to raise a family, and in the summer of 1959, the Lodge family is doing just that. But the tranquil surface masks a disturbing reality, as husband and father Gardner Lodge must navigate the town’s dark underbelly of betrayal, deceit, and violence.’ Via Paramount
