One of the best films of 2015 (actually, THE best film of 2015, according to this writer) was Ex Machina, the directorial debut from Alex Garland. One of the biggest praises of the film was its nature as a sci-fi movie centered around ideas rather than CGI. Oscar Isaac starred in the film, as the eccentric, brilliant developer of an artificial intelligence. Isaac’s performance was one of the highlights of Ex Machina, so of course we’re all thrilled to hear that Garland and Isaac will be pairing together again for the film adaptation of the novel Annihilation.
“The story centers around a biologist (Portman) who, in seeking answers to her husband’s tragic disappearance volunteers for a government expedition into an area sealed off as an environmental disaster zone. What she discovers, however, is pristine wilderness, and a mysterious dark force within it” (Tracking Board).
It’s been assumed that Isaac will be joining the team as the missing husband, alongside the established cast of Natalie Portman, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Gina Rodriguez, and Tessa Thompson. Garland will be directing from his own script, just as he did with Ex Machina (which was nominated for an Academy Award for best screenplay).
Oscar Isaac had a fantastic year in 2015. Apart from Ex Machina, the actor had key roles in Mojave and Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Cinema Blend predicts that Annihilation “stands to be a modern sci-fi smash that frightens a as much as it makes you think.”
