Head Coach Mark Turgeon and the Maryland Terrapins have mutually agreed to part ways just one month into the college basketball season. The move is odd considering the team and Turgeon agreed to a three-year contract extension back in April of 2021. Danny Manning has been named as the interim head coach for Maryland for the remaining portion of the year. Turgeon had been the head coach at Maryland for the past ten seasons.
BREAKING: Maryland and Mark Turgeon have mutually agreed to part ways, per release.
Danny Manning is interim head coach.

Over 10 postseasons at Maryland, Mark Turgeon didn’t win an NCAA tournament game against a higher-seeded team until last season.
He went 3-6 in the Big Ten tournament.
He never had a team rated higher than No. 11 on KenPom.
The Terps can do better.

Mark Turgeon has brought in great recruits over the course of his tenure, but the Big Ten and NCAA Tournament success has been limited at best. The hot seat for the head coach had been warm at times, but the extension had seemingly cooled things down for him. This decision to part ways was mutual according to the team. The timing was just odd.
Maryland is a really good job. Good resources and support, but most importantly: backyard access to the perhaps most fertile recruiting area in the sport.
Terps can pull a real name here. My choice: Kevin Willard.

The Maryland job is a good one and finding a suitable candidate will take some time. Danny Manning will surely be in the mix, but now the program has the entire season to decide on a replacement. Mark Turgeon will also likely be the head coach somewhere else one day soon.
