The California Golden Bears have named Utah Valley Wolverines Head Coach Mark Madsen as the program’s next Head Coach. This comes after the Utah Valley program was eliminated in the semifinals of the 2023 NIT. California fired Head Coach Mark Fox after several disappointing seasons in a row. Rebuilding the Golden Bears program will prove difficult, but Madsen has proved to be a talented Head Coach. Madsen is a former NBA Player who two NBA Championships as a member of the Los Angeles Lakers. He also spent time with the Minnesota Timberwolves.

As the Head Coach of the Utah Valley Wolverines from the 2019-20 college basketball season to this past season, Mark Madsen led the program to an overall record of 70-51 and a Western Athletic Conference record of 39-25. This past season was their first postseason appearance where they were eliminated in the NIT semifinals. The California Golden Bears program has been bad for some time and will need a major overhaul with their new Head Coach.
Mark Madsen, like a lot of other college basketball coaches, has NBA ties. He will use that knowledge and experience in an attempt to rebuild the Golden Bears program. It may take some time, but Madsen is up for the job.
