Manny Pacquiao is set to end his two-year layoff this summer. The future hall of fame fighter is set to take on Errol Spence Jr. in Las Vegas this August. The undercard and venue have not been determined as of yet.
“Many people believe Spence is the best welterweight in the world and one of the best pound-for-pound fighters in the world, and Pacquiao has never shied away from fighting real fights,” Mayweather Promotions President Sean Gibbons said.
“He’s not going to make a fool of himself fighting YouTubers or social media guys like Floyd Mayweather is, and he wants to continue his legacy. He’s always fought the best, and he doesn’t want to change now.”
Gibbons and Pacquiao made sure to reference Mayweather Jr. in their brief statement announcing the bout. Mayweather Jr. defeated Pacquiao by unanimous decision in their only fight six years ago. Mayweather Jr. retired from the sport after fighting Andre Berto later that same year.
He has since moved on to expand his promotions company and various business endeavors. From time to time, he fights exhibition boxing matches. Most recently, he fought Japanese kickboxer Tenshin Nasukawa in 2019. Next month, he is expected to participate in a boxing exhibition with Youtube sensation Logan Paul.
Mayweather Jr. has said that he has done fighting professionally, but Pacquiao continues to nudge him when he can. This time around, he has seemingly not responded to Gibbons or Pacquiao.
