Leon Thomas III may have just released his long awaited debut solo album, Electric Dusk, but it appears he may already be preparing his second solo LP. Prior to taking the stage at the inaugural Blavity House Party this weekend, the “Snooze” songwriter told Kyle Denis of Billboard that his second album is “a different breadth of sound and sonics and even lyrical choices.”
“This new album is definitely a different breadth of sound and sonics and even lyrical choices,” Thomas III explained.
“I feel like the work that I’m doing now is definitely elevated and continuing to grow and build on who I am as an artist, [and] doing shows really played into that. There’s a lot of energy to what I got going on.”
Thomas III is riding the high of his recent success, both as a solo artist and a songwriter/producer. In the last two years, he’s been credited on Giveon’s Give or Take, SZA’s SOS, ¥$’s Vultures and Kiana Ledé’s Grudges. Not to mention, he’s featured on “Until The End of Time” with Coco Jones and “Lucky” with Tish Hyman.
Now, he’ll turn his attention back to his own work with his yet to be released album. As he puts it, the next body of work will build upon the story of Electric Dusk and find him document his journey as a single man.
“[The last album was] post-breakup. ‘Breaking Point’ was the flagship song talking about it,” Thomas III continued.
“[Going into the new album], I was on my single journey just doing my thing and I documented a lot of the things I was going through. It’s called Mutt, like a dog, because I feel like at that time I was being a dog. I was happy being single and I wanted to document that in the landscape of R&B, and [there are] many different ways that I do it. It’s not all super toxic, a lot of it is very introspective and vulnerable as well.”
