“If you guys will have me back, I plan on re-signing here.” – @KyrieIrving
In his first season with Boston following a blockbuster trade with Cleveland, Irving led the team in points and assists on their way to a top seed in the Eastern Conference and a second place finish in the Eastern Conference Playoffs. While Irving was unable to participate in the playoffs following a surgery on his oft-injured knee, Irving still proved to be an integral part of the Celtics core. The news that this will likely not be his last season in Irish green is a huge win for the Celtics organization.
Shams Charania of the Athletic reports that that Irving has already been in contact with the Celtics front office about his plans to re-sign and has expressed his commitment to the organization long-term.
Sources: As Boston star Kyrie Irving says at Celtics fan event that he plans to re-sign with the team next summer, Irving has also communicated with Boston ownership over past several weeks and verbally committed plans to stay long-term.
After Irving forced his way out of Cleveland with a trade demand despite three straight appearances in the NBA Finals, Irving was classified by many as a grade-A flight risk. Irving had been insistent from the beginning that his trade demand was more about finding a place where he could take more leadership, but still many speculated about his motivations and where he would sign next. Today many of those rumors can be put to rest. Nothing is for sure until the ink is on the paper, but it seems likely that Kyrie Irving is a Celtic for the long haul.
