Universal is eagerly dipping back into the nostalgia well. We’ve known for about a month that Halloween, last year’s surprise biggest box office surprise, is getting two sequels in 2020 and 2021. But this week the studio announced via the franchise’s website that Kyle Richards would be returning to star in the next film, Halloween Kills. It was previously announced that Anthony Michael Hall would also be reprising his role in the sequel.
Richards and Hall both originally played the children Jamie Lee Curtis’ Laurie babysat in the 1978 original. Richards reprised her role in Rob Zombie’s 2007 remake but no other films in the franchise. Hall is returning for the first time since 1978, though his character did appear in The Curse of Michael Myers, played by Paul Rudd. However, last year’s Halloween marked something of a soft reboot for the franchise, ignoring every film except the original.
Halloween Kills will pick up after last year’s revival. Plot details are unclear but obviously, Laurie, Tommy (Hall), and Lindsey (Richards) will have to come back together to fight off Michael Myers once again. I’m not sure if I’d expect to see all three make it to the third film, Halloween Ends. However, the studio probably won’t announce anything about that one until after next year’s sequel has hit theaters.
Halloween Kills releases on October 16th, 2020. Halloween Ends lands a year later on October 15th, 2021.
