Since the release of Kingsman: The Golden Circle in 2017, Matthew Vaughn has been quietly building a Kingsman universe. The director has no less than three Kingsman plates spinning right now in a prequel, a threequel, and a potential series. However, the first one up, the prequel, has been taking up most of his time since production is underway in earnest on the film.
Since its announcement as a World War 1 period piece, the title attached has been Kingsman: The Great Game. We learned over the weekend though that the film is actually titled The King’s Man, which is a bit goofy, even for a Kingsman fanboy like me. But, the logline attached to this new title hints at something a bit more nuanced compared to the first two films (with a healthy dose of world-ending peril, of course). “As a collection of history’s worst tyrants and criminal masterminds gather to plot a war to wipe out millions, one man must race against time to stop them.”
So, I expect, and hope, Vaughn’s signature action aesthetic will be all over this film. But, it sounds like we might be getting a more character-driven story as the King’s Man has to save the world. Regardless, it’ll no doubt be a fun ride. Ralph Fiennes, Matthew Goode, and Harris Dickinson are set to star in the film. After this one, Vaughn plans on wrapping up Harry and Eggsy’s story with Kingsman 3.
The King’s Man is set to hit theaters on February 14, 2020.
