Kingsman fans have been patiently waiting for an update on Matthew Vaughn’s next installment in the series. Well, that update came this week but likely wasn’t what many fans were hoping for. The next Kingsman film, a prequel rumored to be titled Kingsman: The Great Game, has been pushed from it’s original November 8, 2019 release. It will now hit theaters a few months later on February 14, 2020, according to The Hollywood Reporter. No official word was given but Fox’s untitled Ford vs. Ferrari film is taking the November slot. Signaling that the studio likely believes that film has Oscar hopes.
Vaughn is currently filming the prequel film, not many details have come out but it is rumored to be set around WW-I. Kingsman: The Great Game has quite the impressive cast with the likes of Ralph Fiennes, Charles Dance, and Rhys Ifans set to star. Matthew Goode, Daniel Bruhl, and newcomer Harris Dickinson are also set to appear in the “period drama.”
That isn’t the end of Vaughn’s plans for the Kingsman universe though as he already has a true follow-up to 2017’s The Golden Circle written. He will apparently shoot that film shortly after he wraps on the prequel later this year. In Vaughn’s words, Kingsman 3 will be “the conclusion of the Harry Hart–Eggsy relationship.” At the end of The Golden Circle, we see the men start down new paths as Eggsy gets married and Harry seems poised to take over the Kingsman. The ending even hints at a new working relationship between the English Kingsman and American Statesman. Even that isn’t it though as Vaughn is apparently also developing a Kingsman series to follow the third mainline film installment.
Kingsman: The Great Game now hits theaters February 14, 2020, with Kingsman 3 likely coming sometime in 2021.
