Amid some reported push back by their star, DeMarcus Cousins, the Sacramento Kings seem to be nearing a deal to bring George Karl in a their new Head Coach.
Cousins reportedly has some issues with not only the idea of bringing Karl in but it also sounds like he has a problem with the city of Sacramento as well.
The team seems to be pushing forward though, despite some reported reluctance from Cousins led by the GM Pete D’Allessandro.
Following from Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports.
The Sacramento Kings and George Karl are progressing on a four-year contract worth between $4 million to $5 million a season to become head coach of the Sacramento Kings, league sources told Yahoo Sports.
Tyrone Corbin will coach the final two Kings’ games before the All-Star break Tuesday at Chicago and Wednesday at Milwaukee, and – barring an unforeseen snag – Karl will take over as head coach afterward, league sources told Yahoo Sports.
Karl’s deal would include a team option on the final year of the contract in the 2017-18 season, sources said. There are still details in the contract that need to be ironed out before it can be finalized, league sources said.
Kings general manager Pete D’Allessandro and Karl, who have history together in Denver, spoke at length several times in the past few days to solidify a deal, sources said.
While Corbin may be staying on for at least another 2 games this is possbily just to set up Karl for a lengthy All-Star break to help him get familiar with the Kings and the players to have them hit the ground running after the All-Star break.
Something has to change in Sacramento if they expect Cousins to remain happy with the team. The Kings have lost 12 of 14 games and 20 of 27 since the December firing of former Coach Mike Malone.
It seems like the change could be the 63 year old Karl who has won 1,131 regular-season games as an NBA coach, including stops with the Cleveland Cavaliers, Golden State Warriors, Seattle Supersonics, Milwaukee Bucks and Denver Nuggets. He’s no stranger to some big name players who might cause some drama as he has coached Gary Payton, Sean Kemp and Carmelo Anthony.
Karl’s been there and done that, but can he handle Boogie?
