John Calipari and the Kentucky Wildcats have developed a five-year partnership with the SWAC. Coined the “Unity Series,” the Wildcats will host an HBCU from the SWAC each year through 2025. This year, the Wildcats will play Southern University at Rupp Arena on December 7. Leading up the game, the two schools will host a week’s worth of special events.
“It’s always good to take your players and give them an opportunity to play in one of the most historical places in all of college basketball,” Southern University Men’s Basketball Coach Sean Woods told the Lexington Herald.
Woods is not only the coach of Southern University’s men’s basketball team, but he is also a former Wildcat. He led the Wildcats to the Elite Eight in 1992 before being knocked out of the tournament by Christian Laettner and the Duke Blue Devils. He is also the program’s all-time leader in assists per game. Given his background in Lexington, Woods is excited to grow his “love affair” with the Wildcats.
“It was a honeymoon,” he said.
“It was a love affair. We laid our mark and played a significant part. When you can play a significant part in one of the most historical and most successful college basketball programs in all of America, it makes you feel really good.”
