Undisputed lightweight champion Katie Taylor has added another title defense to her resume. Earlier this afternoon, Taylor earned a unanimous decision victory against Firuza Sharipova in what was a tougher bout than many expected. After a point deduction in the first half of the fight, the three judges scored the bout 98-92, 97-92 and 96-93 in favor of Taylor.
With her 20th victory secured, Taylor will look toward a long awaited matchup against featherweight champion Amanda Serrano. During a post fight interview, promoter Eddie Hearn indicated that Taylor and Serrano will likely fight at Madison Square Garden in April.
To ensure Taylor-Serrano takes place in 2022, the featherweight champion must successfully defend her title against Miriam Gutiérrez in Tampa, Florida next week. Serrano is currently on a 27-fight winning streak and enters the bout as a heavy favorite.
