Actor Karl Urban is reportedly inching towards the role of Johnny Cage in the next edition of the Mortal Kombat saga. According to Screen Rant, The Boys star is in “final negotiations” for the role.
The last edition of the action-filled series debuted on HBO Max in 2021 with Lewis Tan leading the way as Cole Young. Despite being released in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic on HBO Max, the film earned generally favorable reviews and generated nearly $90 million at the box office.
“Go-for-broke violence has always been a core component of Mortal Kombat, and this reboot succeeds because McQuoid and his team remember that, and have the self-awareness to acknowledge it,” Roxana Hadidi of Polygon commented.
“Not quite a flawless victory, but a solid win all the same. Any future follow-ups would do well to give us an actual Mortal Kombat tournament to enjoy,” Amon Warmann of Empire Magazine wrote.
Two years removed from the last film, the next chapter will pick up as the crew prepares for the arrival of sorcerer Shang Tsung. However, it is unclear just when he’ll arrive on the big screen.
