John Cena is joining the comic book movie game. Wednesday, Variety reported that the former pro-wrestler is in talks to join James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad in an unspecified role. Cena joins Jai Courtney and Margot Robbie from the original Suicide Squad, as well as fellow franchise newcomer, Idris Elba.
It’s still unclear whether Gunn’s film will be a sequel to the 2016 trainwreck or not. However, recently a producer on the film claimed it is a full reboot. This was basically confirmed a few weeks ago when Elba, who originally signed on to replace Will Smith as Deadshot, was pivoted to play an entirely different (and unknown) character. Also, while the first film had its struggles critically, it did end up bringing in nearly $750 million at the global box office.
Cena has been slowly making a name for himself in Hollywood over the last few years. Last year though, he really exploded thanks to his type-breaking standout performance in Blockers. Then, he followed that up with a more ‘on-brand’ but equally praised role in Bumblebee.
The Suicide Squad hits theaters on August 6, 2021.
