Just when you thought Philadelphia 76er Joel Embiid couldn’t be any more of a fantastic person, TMZ reports the rising NBA star recently visited rapper Meek Mill in prison.
Meek is currently serving a 2-4 year sentence after violating the terms of his probation that stems from a 2008 arrest. The Philly native has received undying support from the Sixers organization, including co-owner Michael Rubin, who was reported to have accompanied Embiid on his visit.
TMZ reports that the visit “really lifted Meek’s spirits.
Embiid isn’t the only star athlete to have visited or talked with Meek during his incarceration. Ousted NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick was also reported to have spoken with Meek in hopes of giving him some encouragement in this difficult time.
“Spoke to Meek Mill & he wanted [people] to know regardless of his unjust situation, he’s in good spirits & humbled by the support the people have shown him,” Kaepernick tweeted following the visit. “We’ll continue to fight against the harsh sentencing practices that have affected Meek & millions of other POC for generations.”
The support from Embiid is only going to ingratiate the already affable big man in the Philadelphia community even more. With the early success he and the 76ers are enjoying this season, it’s very likely the City of Brotherly Love could rally around Embiid and Meek Mill through this ordeal.
