JJ Redick made his triumphant return to the sports media world this week. After a hiatus from his highly regarded JJ Redick Podcast on The Vertical and some changes to Yahoo’s NBA news breaking team, Redick joined a new team. Change was a big theme during the summer of 2017 for Redick.
JJ Redick elected to join the Philadelphia 76ers this summer on a one-year, $23 million deal to be the veteran shooter the Sixers desperately needed to round out their lineup. For some, it was a real simple, no-brainer move. JJ joins Philly, stretches the floor and catches passes from Markelle Fultz and Ben Simmons coming off Joel Embiid screens. It appears to be a match made in heaven. But as we learned it wasn’t that simple for Redick and especially his family.
The other team Redick joined was the UNINTERRUPTED network. The LeBron James-backed media venture already features a multitude of athlete hosted content including shows from Serena Williams, Draymond Green, Rob Gronkowski, Channing Frye and Richard Jefferson and Victor Cruz. Redick’s departure from The Vertical allowed him to join James’ team and the new Sixers guard debut episode of the ‘Chronicles of Redick’ saw him talk about joining the network with UNINTERRUPTED CEO, Maverick Carter and he also chatted with his new general manager Bryan Colangelo about 76ers and their negotiations.
Carter and Redick discussed the process of joining UNINTERRUPTED and not only his new podcast but a documentary he was debuting discussing his free agency journey. Redick revealed some interesting information about summer and the teams who wanted him. The Houston Rockets offered him more money overall but he didn’t like the fit on their team and the Miami Heat were also a team that he considered but without a doubt the biggest pressure he felt was to join the Brooklyn Nets. And it was all centered around his family.
In the new documentary, which you can watch below courtesy of UNINTERRUPTED, Redick goes through his journey from the end of his season with the Clippers all the way through signing with Philly. The main focus of this project was for Redick to show everyone that free agency isn’t just all about contracts and negotiations. The human element plays a huge part in these decisions.
