Nearly 70 years later, the murder of 14-year-old Emmett Till evokes a raw, visceral emotion when examined in the context of America’s treatment of Black youth. This month, the family of Emmett Till and the rest of the nation will revisit this tragic incident through the lens of Chinonye Chukwu’s new film, Till. As part of the film’s release, Jazmine Sullivan and producer D’Mile have crafted “Stand Up” as the lead single from the movie’s soundtrack.
“I’m honored to be able to contribute to such a powerful film about such a historic and tragic moment in American history,” Jazmine Sullivan said about the track and its importance.
“I believe that part of my purpose is to give space for stories that are often ignored and silenced; the Black experience in particular. So I’m glad that the story of Emmett Till and his mother Mamie Till is being told so generations old and young can be educated and inspired to make a change. I hope that after people see this film they’ll be moved to stand up against the racism we are still facing today.”
Till will not arrive in theaters until October 14, 2022. Until then, Jazmine Sullivan and D’Mile have delivered “Stand Up” below.
