In shocking news, Villanova Head Coach Jay Wright has announced he is retiring effective immediately. The 60-year-old coach informed his team last night of his intentions and a successor was named shortly after. Fordham Rams Head Coach Kyle Neptune is the Villanova choice to replace the Hall of Fame Head Coach. With Wright stepping away from the program there is a true changing of the guard in college basketball with the titans of the sport stepping away from the game.
Just in: Villanova’s Jay Wright — one of college basketball’s iconic coaches and a Naismith Basketball Hall of Famer — is seriously contemplating retiring this offseason, sources tell @TheAthletic @Stadium. Wright, 60, is meeting with his family and making final decision soon.

Jay Wright will be remembered as one of the greatest coaches to grace the courts of the NCAA. In his career at Villanova, he led the team to an overall record of 520-197 and a Big East record of 244-123. His lists of accomplishments are almost too long to list, but they include two NCAA Championships, two college coach of the year awards, and numerous Big East awards and championships. His two championships came in 2016 and 2018.
We’re excited to turn the reins of this treasure of a program over to @kyleneptune . Kyle was a part of our staff for 10 years , helped us win two national titles and returns after a successful season @FordhamMBB . He understands our culture and will keep it strong . pic.twitter.com/Nf6n1B5Gcv

Villanova will enter a new era much like the Duke Blue Devils will this year and the North Carolina Tar Heels did last year. Jay Wright is a titan and replacing him will be no small task, but it had to happen eventually. We here at Def Pen Sports wish Wright the best in his retirement.
