Back in August, everything was pretty much coming up golden for the Boston Celtics. They agreed to a contract with Gordon Hayward, they came away with Jayson Tatum in the 2017 NBA Draft and although Isaiah Thomas was battling a hip injury, their conference rival Cleveland Cavaliers were having internal problems with Kyrie Irving wanting to be traded from the team. But once the season started, a lot changed in a short amount of time.
Way before Gordon Hayward saw his season come to an end, the Boston Celtics elected to trade Isaiah Thomas, Jae Crowder, Ante Zizic, a first round pick from the Brooklyn Nets and eventually a 2020 second round pick. It was a calculated Danny Ainge move, one that wasn’t very popular with their fans and Thomas alike.
Isaiah Thomas exploded into an NBA All-Star during his time with the Boston Celtics taking over as the top scoring option and also putting up career numbers that no Celtics guards had before him. It appeared Thomas found his home with Boston after bouncing around to a few teams. Little did he know, no matter how many points he scored or how many injuries he battled through, the business of the NBA stops for no man. Not even the day you arrive home from your one year wedding anniversary.
The following is an episode from ‘The Book of Isaiah Chapter 2’, courtesy of The Players Tribune, chroniciling Thomas’ recent injury, family tragedy and now the trade to Cleveland.
Welcome to Book of Isaiah II, a documentary series that chronicles the life of Isaiah Thomas as he faces the challenges of playing for a new team.
In Chapter 5, Isaiah reveals the exact moment he was traded to the Cleveland Cavaliers. Following a conversation with Celtics general manager Danny Ainge, Isaiah shares his immediate reaction to the news, tells his family and friends, and begins the process of leaving his beloved city of Boston for a new home.
