WBA “Regular” Lightweight Champion Gervonta “Tank” Davis has been taken into custody for allegedly violating the terms of his 90-day house arrest sentence. Michael Benson of Talksport has reported that Davis has now been ordered to serve the remainder of his sentence in state custody. At this time, Davis nor his legal representatives have issued a statement regarding the matter.
The boxer’s most recent legal issue stems from an incident that occurred in his hometown of Baltimore, Maryland nearly three years ago. On November 5, 2020, Davis reportedly returned home to make an appearance at a nightclub. Afterward, the boxer received a police escort back to his hotel. As he made his way back to the Four Seasons Hotel, he is accused of breaking away from the police vehicles, running a red light and crashing into a fence near a 7-Eleven. In the aftermath of the crash, surveillance video appears to show him getting into another vehicle and fleeing the scene.
A witness who was reportedly hit by Davis’ car said that she begged the boxer for help as he fled the scene.
“I said, ‘I have to get home to my daughter, I’m pregnant.’ He never once came over to help me,” Jyair Smith told the court.
“Nobody from that car that hit them got out of the car and had the decency to help any of the people in my client’s car,” Smith’s civil attorney, Gil Amaral, added.
In May of 2023, Davis reappeared in court to receive his sentence for the hit-and-run. He was sentenced to 90 days of house arrest, 200 hours of community service and three years of probation. At this time, it is unclear to what extent his most recent alleged violation may impact his overall sentence.
