The second half of season 8 of Game of Thrones has been kept mostly under wraps until tonight due to last week’s monumental episode. Tonight we saw the aftermath of that battle and things aren’t looking as great as you’d imagine for Jon, Dany, and co after they won the battle for humanity. Now, they’ve got to deal with Cersei and she’s already about three steps ahead of them…
If you missed last week or just need a refresher check out that episode’s breakdown here.
We’re sure you’re just as excited as we are to have Thrones back in our lives, even if it is just for six weeks. Def Pen’s gonna make the most out of those six weeks though so be sure to check after each episode to catch our breakdowns of what happened, and what we think is gonna happen next.
Immediate Reactions
Es:
The first 45 minutes of the episode were pretty much a ‘jersey retiring’ celebration for Arya Stark. After what she did in the last episode, they had to cheer her on. I’m kind of worried about how they’re trying to go with the tension between Jon, Sansa and Danny.
Grant:
So, I know that you need conflict to drive a dramatic show like Thrones, but to me, it felt like most everyone was drinking Dumb Bitch Juice during this episode. Dany and Sansa are on the same side but refuse to talk things out, Jaime for some reason did a complete 180 on his feelings for Cersei (even though I think he’s lying to Brienne and plans on killing his sister, but I guess we’ll have to see), and Euron actually believes Cersei is pregnant with his baby.
This Week’s Winner
Es:
My guy Gendry Baratheon took a W and an L, but I think we gotta acknowledge the fact that he’s now a Lord. But overall, Cersei won the day. Now Danny is a dragon down and an aid down as well. Things are getting remarkably intense.
Grant:
This week definitely goes to Cersei. She’s got numbers on Dany for their eventual showdown and she’s also indirectly responsible for killing another one of Dany’s dragons.
This Week’s Loser
Es:
I gotta say Tyrion. He’s had this uncharacteristically optimistic approach this entire season and it hasn’t paid off and he’s slowly loosing Danny’s trust. As hand, you can’t let that happen. And with Danny’s growing madness, it might become an issue.
Grant:
Is it too much to say anyone on Dany’s side? Another dragon down and dwindling forces don’t bode well for anyone loyal to her right now. On top of that, Dany’s definitely starting to lose it a little bit.
Best Moment
Es:
Let’s go with Gendry. This dude was literally walking to the Bathroom and got interrupted by the Queen. 5 minutes later he’s a Lord.
Grant:
For me, this week’s best moment was Arya deciding to hit the road with the Hound again. I don’t know how much we’ll get to see them interacting on their journey since they’re both probably going to play a major role in next week’s conflict at the capitol. But, seeing the two of them back together just feels right.
Worst Moment
Es:
Missandei dying was eventual but awful. Greyworm will die an honorable death now. This now just puts Danny over the top as well. As her madness boils, the situation becomes even worse.
Grant:
Worst moment tonight was when Dany lost her dragon. It was so sudden and heart-breaking, almost on par with the Red Wedding for me in terms of its shock factor.
After What Happened Tonight, Who’s Most Likely to Sit On The Iron Throne?
Es:
Seems like Jon is going for it now. He seems hesitant. Danny is losing him (and her team). Cersei seems in over her head and Arya and Gendry are too busy loving each other.
Grant:
It’s gotta be Cersei. She’s better prepared for the war to come and Dany’s unraveling pretty quickly.
Future Predictions
Es:
Give me some fights. A war battle. This was a remarkably slow episode after the jam-packed episode we got last. I wouldn’t be surprised with it being the last episode for it to involve Arya and the Hound taking on the Mountain in some capacity.
Grant:
I think next week is going to be a bloodbath. We’re (hopefully) going to get a battle between Cersei’s forces and Dany’s forces and at least 3 more characters will most likely die before the credits roll on episode 5.
