Freddie Gibbs has reportedly inked a deal with AWAL, a record imprint operating under Sony Music Entertainment. Under the agreement, the GRAMMY-nominated artist is expected to retain ownership and control of his artistic vision. Meanwhile, AWAL will take over his marketing efforts, playlist promotion, and data analytics among other services. He joins a roster that already includes JPEGMAFIA and Little Simz.
“I am truly honored to be able to continue to create greatness with my brothers and on our own terms. Freddie is the leader of his class. It feels great to be able to provide the best team/ecosystem to complement all he and Lambo’s hard work,” AWAL’s Norva Denton said.
“Happy to be where they want me…I feel celebrated. I’m AWAL Shawty! I love the freedom. We’re able to create at our own pace and it feels good at this stage in my career,” Gibbs added.
In addition to signing with AWAL, Freddie Gibbs shared his sixth studio album, You Only Die 1nce. Released through Warner Records, the 13-track project has earned strong reviews from critics.
“There’s nothing flashy about the music or Freddie Gibbs’ rhyme scheme, but the earnestness on display is what has always allowed the rapper to stand out from his peers,” Elia Andrews of Hot New Hip-Hop wrote.
“[You Only Die 1nce] a return to the underground, it reminds you exactly why he remains such a beloved figure for rap fans,” Robin Murray of Clash added.
Freddie Gibbs will celebrate the release of his latest album with an appearance at Looney Tunes in New York on Wednesday, November 6.
