Lightweight prospect Floyd Schofield improved to 13-0 with a unanimous decision victory against Alberto Mercado on January 28 at the YouTube Theater. All three judges scored the bout 100-90 in favor of the heavy-handed prospect.
Schofield appeared to be in control of the fight from the opening bell. He knocked Mercado down in the second round and appeared to send him to the canvas at several other points throughout the fight. Despite Schofield’s onslaught, the crafty veteran was able to push through for ten rounds and maintain the distinction of never being stopped within the distance.
Schofield has earned high praise from his promoter and former world champion, Oscar De La Hoya. During a recent interview with Chris Mannix of DAZN and Sports Illustrated, De La Hoya went as far as to say the unbeaten lightweight is the best prospect he’s ever signed.
“I’m really, really excited for Floyd,” De La Hoya told Akin Reyes and Barak Bess of The DAZN Boxing Show.
“I think Floyd is one of these throwback fighters. Beautiful story, by the way. Grew up homeless with his father, in the streets, literally, so you know, he’s 12-0, 10 KOs. He’s in a great fight with a Puerto Rican fighter, Alberto Mercado, who has a great record. It’s a great step up. It’s for an international title. But you watch, Schofield will be, I mean, he will be a threat to anybody at 135.”
