The Ohio State Buckeyes announced that standout freshmen guard DJ Carton would be stepping away from basketball for an indefinite period. He cited his mental health not being where he needed or wanted it to be. There was also a major stressor that this would be a temporary departure from the program. The time table for his absence and return is unclear at this time.

Carton has been a standout for the Buckeyes and was a big part of their run to the top of the AP Poll. His first year with Chris Holtmann saw the freshman guard averaging 10.4 points, 2.8 rebounds, and right at 3 assists per game. He was also shooting a solid 47.7 percent from the field and 40 percent from beyond the arc. Ohio State started off as one of the best teams in basketball, but Big Ten play hit them hard. They are currently 13-7 and 3-6 in conference play.
DJ Carton is a reminder that none of us are immune from mental-health issues. Grammy winners struggle just like 5-star prospects struggle just like folks you’ve never heard of struggle. I admire anybody who is willing to acknowledge as much, step away and get help. https://t.co/aWT0UeEYTr

It takes a strong person to admit they are struggling and need to take some time to heal the injuries that no one can physically see. DJ Carton can take some time to heal and come back stronger than before he left. It is a stark reminder that the stars of sports and entertainment are not immune to those types of problems. It is great to see the Ohio State program support the guard in his decision to get healthy.
We here at Def Pen wish Carton a healthy and speedy recovery.
