When Tyler Perry’s Divorce In The Black made its Prime Video debut, let’s just say that it didn’t receive the best reviews from film critics. Andrew Lawrence of The Guardian said it was “easily [Tyler Perry’s] worst film to date.”
“Yet another narrative metastasized beneath the ineptitude of Tyler Perry’s quill, Divorce in the Black is an exploitative odyssey of the Black community and soap opera cliches,” Nicholas Bell of Fish Jelly Film Reviews added.
However, film critics, myself included, do not dictate how well a movie or series will be received by the general audience. In fact, Rotten Tomatoes shows 74% of the audience approved of Perry’s work while 0% of critics did. As it turns out, the general audience flocked to Prime Video to watch the Megan Good-led picture.
“Nielsen reported that it hit more than 498 million minutes watched in its first four days of availability on Amazon Prime Video — but according to Amazon, the soapy drama has also driven more sign-ups to Prime Video in the U.S. than any Amazon MGM Studios-produced movie to-date,” Angelique Jackson of Variety reports.
Perry’s Divorce In The Black stars Megan Good in the role of Ava, a heartbroken woman deserted by her spouse, Dallas, played by Cory Hardrict. However, Dallas’ unsettling ways follow Ava as she reaches for a new shot at love with her true soulmate.
Divorce In The Black is one of four films included in a deal Perry inked with Prime Video back in 2022. In addition, he has also locked in deals with Viacom’s BET and Netflix. Moving forward, he’s tied to six projects, including Six Triple Eight, Straw, Route 187, Beauty In Black, Joy Ridge and Black, White and Blue. Not to mention, he recently teamed up with BET to launch comedy and drama FAST channels programmed with his catalog of shows.
