On Saturday, May 20, 2023, boxing fans from around the world were locked into ESPN’s telecast of the undisputed lightweight title clash featuring Devin Haney and Vasyl Lomachenko. After a dozen hard-fought rounds, all three judges scored the match in Haney’s favor. While some did feel that Haney did enough to outpoint the future Hall of Fame inductee, others went as far as to call the outcome a “robbery.”
“I thought it was a robbery. I thought [Vasyl] Lomachenko won,” two-division champion Shakur Stevenson told Sean Zittel of Fight Hype after the fight.
“This is what hurts boxing. [Lomachenko] should have won. I don’t get it. I was there. [Lomachenko] was landing the cleaner shots and finished the fight strong,” super lightweight contender Ryan Garcia tweeted.
“Devin’s my guy, I was rooting for him, but 116-112 – that’s crazy,” WBO Welterweight Champion Terence Crawford added.
Despite the pushback he’s gotten from some of his peers, Haney is confident that he did enough to win the fight.
“At the end of the day, the people can say what they want to say. The judges had a unanimous decision. That’s all that matters,” Haney told reporters after the fight.
“Each judge was on the same page when it came to that decision, so I got the victory.”
