“Not even a week [removed] from the last fight [and I’ve] got that itch already,” undisputed lightweight champion Devin Haney tweeted on Friday, May 26.
On May 20, undisputed lightweight champion Devin Haney returned to the ring at MGM Grand Garden Arena in his adopted hometown of Las Vegas, Nevada. In his latest bout, he went to battle with the toughest opponent of his carer thus far, Vasyl Lomachenko. Through the first half of the fight, Haney controlled the pace, used his size and worked his punches to Lomachenko’s torso. In the second half of the fight, Lomachenko turned up the heat and stormed back into the fight. Ultimately, all three judges scored the bout in Haney’s favor while many on the outside looking in felt that Haney won the fight.
With all the lightweight belts in his possession, Haney has a tough decision to make. He could remain at lightweight and pursue a rematch with Lomachenko or fight the likes of Gervonta “Tank” Davis and Shakur Stevenson. On the other hand, he could move up to a new division and challenge the likes of Regis Prograis, Teofimo Lopez, Rolando Romero or Josh Taylor. Recently, he logged into Twitter and began letting fans know what direction his career may be headed in.
“Yo [Devin Haney], come pull up to the fight in New Orleans in [three] weeks. I got some ringside tickets for you. We [are] gonna show that southern hospitality,” WBC Super Lightweight Champion Regis Prograis tweeted.
“I’m thinking bout it. I’m assuming Eddie told you about that lil’ call I just gave [him],” Haney replied.
“For the record, I called Eddie about making a Regis fight. He didn’t call me,” Haney added.
Haney remains a free agent after finishing his three-fight deal with Top Rank. Thus far, he has not indicated where he’ll take his talents next. Until then, Regis Prograis will prepare for his latest title defense against Danielito Zorrilla on June 17 in New Orleans, Louisiana.
