A few weeks ago, Saúl “Canelo” Álvarez beat John Ryder by unanimous decision to retain the undisputed super middleweight title. Immediately after the scorecards were read, Álvarez made it clear that he’d like to challenge Dmitry Bivol for the light heavyweight championship in his next fight.
“That’s the idea, a rematch with Bivol,” he said.
If his representatives are unable to reach a deal with Bivol’s promoter, he may look to defend his super middleweight title against an opponent such as David Benavidez.
“If the fight with Bivol doesn’t happen, then we’ll see. I’m able to fight everybody,” he added.
Well, one fighter took Álvarez’s comments as an opportunity to push for a fight for the super middleweight championship. Former UFC Champion Conor McGregor said he’d jump at the opportunity to fight the super middleweight titleholder.
“I saw [John] Ryder, I’m a southpaw, Ryder was a southpaw, Billy Joe [Saunders] was a southpaw,” McGregor said. “I’ve seen methods, I’ve seen things I do, and I know he’s waning. I would fight Canelo no f*cking problem,” he said.
However, it appears that Álvarez has little to no interest in a fight with McGregor in the future.
“I’ll beat him with one hand on my back,” he said.
Undeterred by Álvarez’s dismissive tone, McGregor upped the trash talk with another call out of his own.
“Canelo you little ginger sausage. I’d beat you with no hands. Don’t forget,” McGregor tweeted.
