North Carolina freshman big man and former five-star recruit Day’Ron Sharpe has officially declared for the 2021 NBA Draft. He has indicated that he will hire an agent and end his college career to enter the NBA. Sharpe is expected to go somewhere between the very late lottery and the end of the first round. There should not be a scenario where he falls past the 25th overall selection. He spent much of his college career as the spark plug off the bench for the Tar Heels. The news comes just after fellow North Carolina big Walker Kessler announced he was transferring from the program.

The North Carolina big man averaged 9.5 points and 6.9 rebounds in just 19.3 per game for the Tar Heels in his single season. He should be a talented rebounder at the next level for sure and his work ethic is unquestioned. Sharpe had the following statement about declaring for the draft. “I feel that I’m now ready for the next level, I’ve made it this far and there’s no reason for me to stop now!”
Head Coach Roy Williams seems to understand that Sharpe is ready for the NBA and said as much in his statement after the announcement. He also said the following. “I loved coaching him, he has a tremendously high motor. He’s naturally one of the greatest rebounders I’ve ever coached and a young man I truly just enjoyed.” This is high praise from a head coach that has had some of the best rebounders in college basketball come to play under him.
Day’Ron Sharpe needs some fine-tuning like most young prospects, but in the right circumstances, he could thrive in the NBA.
