The list of stars partaking in the Team USA minicamp next month continues to grow with the announcement of Carmelo Anthony who will be limited due to knee surgery and Blake Griffin will join an impressive list of NBA stars competing for a roster spot.
One player who continues to improve each year, but plays a position that’s so deep in today’s NBA game is Portland Trail Blazers point guard Damian Lillard who may not bother showing to the minicamp.
Jody Mac: Are you headed to Vegas next month?
Lillard: Probably not.
Jody Mac: Why Not?
Lillard: I did it the last few summers and last summer I didn’t make it. I don’t know why I would go. After I got cut last summer, I don’t think I’m a part of it.
-Quote from the Jody Mac show CBS Sports
Lillard missed an opportunity to play for Team USA last season after being left off after Kyrie Irving was given the final roster spot.
Damian Lillard was up against guys like Stephen Curry, Derrick Rose, and Kyrie Irving so realistically someone was going to be left off, but the team did win the FIBA world cup so clearly the choice was not exactly a mistake.
Maybe in Lillard’s eyes the choice was a mistake and you can’t blame him for feeling that way but if I’m Damian Lillard you go and prove to those guys you deserve that roster spot.
Hopefully he does change his mind with an injured Irving and a recovering Carmelo Anthony he has a better shot than last season, but based off this interview I’d say there’s a slim chance he shows up.
