The Dallas Cowboys have placed the franchise tag on quarterback Dak Prescott, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. Prescott was drafted by the Cowboys in 2016 and immediately became their starter, earning Pro-Bowl honors in his first season as a pro.

Since his rookie season, Dak Prescott has continued to transform into what most believe to be a solid franchise quarterback. However, it appears that the Cowboys aren’t particularly sold yet, as they not only declined to sign him to a deal before last season, but they still can’t come to terms on a long-term extension even now.
Instead, Prescott will play his 2020-21 season under the exclusive franchise tag. Though Prescott will earn a large salary, the lack of long-term security and knowing the Cowboys are still not 100% sold could create tension down the road.
The Cowboys have perhaps the most intriguing offseason of any NFL team coming up. With Prescott’s situation ironed out, the Cowboys still have two studs on either side of the ball expecting top dollar contracts in wide receiver Amari Cooper and cornerback Byron Jones. It’ll be interesting to see how owner Jerry Jones and the rest of Dallas’ front office navigate the rest of their free agency period after locking up Dak Prescott for at least one more season.
