CNN is the latest major company to be hit by layoffs amid economic uncertainty. In a memo obtained by several media outlets, newly appointed CNN CEO Chris Licht said that the company will notify a “limited number of individuals” of their job status on Wednesday. One day later, the company is expected to notify additional “impacted employees.” By the end of the week, Licht and the company plan to “follow up with more details.”
“Our people are the heart and soul of this organization,” Licht said, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
“It is incredibly hard to say goodbye to any one member of the CNN team, much less many. I recently described this process as a gut punch, because I know that is how it feels for all of us.”
The network has undergone a number of changes prior to the most recent round of layoffs. After merging with Discovery, the network cut its streaming service, CNN+, and let go off hundreds of employees. In addition, the network has shifted a portion of its talent while letting go of certain on-air reporters like Brian Stelter and John Harwood.
“It will be a difficult time for everyone,” Licht continued.
“I know these changes affect both our departing colleagues and those who remain, and we have resources designed to support you.”
