Nearly two months ago, Claressa Shields returned home to the state of Michigan for a defense of her undisputed middleweight title. Backed by a performance from Kash Doll and the support of her fans, she cruised to a unanimous decision victory. Now, she is looking for the next challenge in an incredibly successful career. As it stands, she has her sights set on becoming the first fighter to win undisputed titles in three different classes. In order to do so, she must beat her longtime foe, Savannah Marshall, for the second time as a pro.
Claressa Shields and Savannah Marshall have developed a relationship that is less than friendly. The U.K. fighter has the distinction of being the only person to secure a decision victory against Shields as an amateur. In October, the two women met as pros and fought for the undisputed middleweight championship. In front of Marshall’s fans in the U.K., Shields eased her way to a decision victory. Looking ahead, Shields is not opposed to giving Marshall a second shot, but she is not budging on one particular detail.
“Come to America, that’s all I ask. She is not respectful enough, she is not honest enough for me to give her a chance here to fight for my belts again in the UK, for me to fight her period in the UK,” Shields told Sky Sports when asked about a second fight with Marshall.
“She went on Sky Sports and said ‘Claressa can’t sell tickets in America’, that I’m hard to work with, that nobody wants to work with me and that’s why I’m not a big name in America – all lies. And she thinks that I want to give her another opportunity to fight against me to make millions of dollars when she’s that disrespectful. Come to the US.”
