Megan Thee Stallion, Meek Mill, Rihanna, Lizzo, Migos, Nas and more celebrities publicly advocate for police reform by signing an open letter.
In the wake of George Floyd‘s violent death at the hands of police officers, citizens are calling for immediate change in the country’s criminal justice system. Celebrities are among those using their platforms and spending their money to push for justice and action. Recently, an open letter directed towards the New York Police Department has been amplified by dozens of talented stars in support of repealing 50-A.
new yorkers ! please support the repeal of 50 A, a new york law that blocks crucial information in the search for law enforcement accountability: https://t.co/hMm9nQPEq7 ? #repeal50a @nygovcuomo @andreascousins @carlheastie

Ariana Grande, Billie Eilish, Justin Bieber, Demi Lovato, J. Balvin, and more join the aforementioned artists in support of this cause. According to Yahoo News, the letter was sent to New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, New York Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins, and Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie, and shared publicly on June 08, 2020.
“We must hold accountable those who violate the oath to protect and serve and find justice for those who are victim to their violence. An indispensable step is having access to disciplinary records of law enforcement officers. New York statute 50-A blocks that full transparency, shielding a history of police misconduct from public scrutiny, making it harder to seek justice and bring about reform. It must be repealed immediately,” states the letter.
A petition supporting the reform allows all to send their legislature the same message. More information on the #Repeal50A movement can be found here.
