Carmelo Anthony is seen as a lot of things to people. He’s a jerk, a fool, a clown, self-centered and a loser. And that’s just the comments on his instagram account.
When it boils down to it, Melo is human, just like you and I. Recently, he decided to take a trip to Puerto Rico, an island both of our families call home. He took a tour of San Juan and walked around one of the roughest neighborhoods that the capital city of the island has to offer. He also brought some of his Knicks teammates, including Kristaps Porzingis, to the island for a small mini-camp before their season got underway.
Carmelo Anthony is trying to do something bigger than basketball for Puerto Rico and in the video above, courtesy of Vice Sports, he gets right to it and tells everyone how he wants to help the island his family calls home.

To most, Puerto Rico is currently an island in economic decline. But to Carmelo Anthony it’s a place of family, opportunity and a growing sports culture. With both seasons around the corner, we spent a few days training with a group of Knicks (including rookies Kristaps Porzingis and Jerian Grant) and seeing the stadium that will house Melo’s Puerto Rico FC NASL team. We took a trip to La Perla, one of PR’s most notorious hoods, to hang out with reggaeton legend Tempo, fresh out of prison after a 12 year bid.
